Your Gifts at Work

With approximately 150 separate funds, the Athens Medical Center Foundation offers you a way of supporting every institution and program of KMC. Also, new funds are established each year to support additional areas in which donors have a special interest. Your gifts are put to work as soon as practical and prudent, and without any deduction for fundraising or other operating costs. Following are examples of your accomplishments through the Foundation during 2009.

Because you gave...
  • 1,126 uninsured Dayton-area women received free breast imaging and other diagnostic services. Thank you for participating in the Walk for Women's Wellness, Ribbon of Hope events, and for your gifts to the Women's Wellness Fund.

  • Kettering Cardiovascular Institute continued to provide nationally acclaimed cardiac services to Athens Medical Center patients. Over $190,000 in equipment and educational endeavors were funded in 2009. A heartfelt thank you to our Heart to Heart Gala sponsors and attendees.

  • A flat screen television and DVD/video player was installed in Athens Medical Center's Robert J. Makarius Memorial Library. Thank you for providing these new resources for our cancer patients and their families.

  • A new play area was added to the Surgery Waiting Area to provide a space appropriate for our younger visitors. Thank you, physician's office staff, for this special Christmas gift in honor of the physicians in your practice.

  • 175 Dayton-area men received free prostate screenings from the proceeds of our annual golf tournament. Thank you for golfing with us.

  • Oncology Services received gifts that were used to help purchase treatment equipment and to provide staff education. A sincere thank you to donors who gave in honor and in memory of family and friends.

Thank you to those who joined with us to advance the mission and vision of Kettering College of Medical Arts.

  • Kettering College of Medical Arts students received over $27,000 from donor-designated scholarships. Thank you scholarship donors for making a difference in the lives of our students.

  • Kettering College of Medical Arts students experiencing severe financial crises received approximately $3,500 in emergency assistance. Thank you for providing encouragement during difficult times.

  • 24 hospital staff from Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Wallace Kettering Neuroscience Institute, Intensive Care Units, Special Care Nursery, Reproductive Medicine, Gastro-Intestinal, Sleep Disorder Clinic, and several other departments received over $36,000 in funding for recertification and conference expenses. Thank you physicians and grateful patients.

  • The Medical Library's Conference Room was renovated, and as a result, is now available 24/7 for the convenience of our physicians and residents. Thank you to the anonymous donors who made this renovation possible. The Medical Library also added to the collection and maintained access to the most up-to-date software. Thank you, physicians, for your generosity.

  • The Chaplain's Outreach Fund provided counseling to those who otherwise could not afford these services. Thank you, physicians, for showing your compassion in this manner.

A partnership with the Dayton VA Hospital for the study of mild traumatic stress disorder in veterans returning from combat is making excellent use of WKNI resources, as is a study with the U.S. Air Force on the topic of pilot fatigue. Thank you to all who gave for the WKNI programs.

  • Donor gifts to the Schizophrenia Fund made possible important research on treatment options based on imaging studies, as well as studies in new treatment options for auditory hallucinations. Major papers were presented at national and international research conferences from prior research. Thank you for contributing to this important research.

  • Kettering's Innovation Center became part of a collaborative research program including Siemens Medical, daytaOhio, and Wright State University as a result of a State of Ohio Third Frontier Program grant. This grant provides upgrading the research MRI to its most advanced capabilities, thus enhancing patient care. A special thanks to those who made this grant a reality.
