  • Proceeds from Heart to Heart, the Foundation’s annual gala, together with funds given during the Kettering Cardiovascular Institute capital campaign, provide cardiac services and equipment for Athens Medical Center patients. In addition to operating support in excess of $225,000, donors provided over $100,000 in 2007 for a new ultrasound intravascular imaging system.

  • 891 uninsured Dayton-area women received free screening and diagnostic mammograms (and, when needed, biopsies and prostheses) and other services in 2007 as a result of the Walk for Women’s Wellness, Ribbon of Hope events, and donor gifts to the Women’s Wellness Fund.

  • Wallace-Kettering Neuroscience Institute received significant funding for operations and medical research from the Foundation and other external grants. Scientists and physicians are capitalizing on Athens Medical Center’s leadership in imaging technology to develop non-invasive diagnostic procedures, to increase the safety of brain and spine surgery, and to study and treat epilepsy. Other research focused on stroke, multiple sclerosis, Tourette’s syndrome, personality disorders, and alcoholism. Clinical trials focus on tumor treatment, stroke, and degenerative disc disease. In all, donors provided over $300,000 for this research in 2007.

  • Neurosurgery patients benefit from over $245,000 in donor-funded equipment during 2007. A surgery O-arm imaging system, provided in part by the Foundation, is the first of its kind in either Dayton or Cincinnati and provides unparalleled imaging during spine surgery. Also, a new state-of-the-art neuro-microscope was purchased for neurosurgery, thanks to Foundation donors.

  • Donor gifts to the Schizophrenia Fund made possible important research into genetic markers, patient symptoms, pharmacotherapy, and treatment options based on imaging studies.

  • Proceeds from the Foundation’s annual Golf Tournament provided prostate cancer screenings for 241 men and colon cancer screening kits for distribution at Relay for Life and other venues.

  • Unrestricted gifts to the Foundation were used by the Board of Directors to fund health screenings and educational opportunities to residents of subsidized senior housing projects. Please see the Thank You article on page 6 for one of the most gratifying results of this grant.

  • Unrestricted gifts were also allocated to KMC’s hip and knee replacement program for patient education materials designed to shorten their hospital stay, prevent post-surgery accidents, and improve their rehabilitation.

  • Nearly every hospital department received a grant from the Volunteers Equipment Fund. The Volunteers distributed over $82,000 which they had earned through their Christmas sale and various fundraising efforts throughout the year.

  • Scholarships and other financial aid totaling over $140,000 enabled 106 Kettering College of Medical Arts students to pursue nursing and allied health careers. Also, four new scholarships were established in 2007.

  • Kettering College of Medical Arts faculty received over $8,000 for faculty development purposes.
  • Resident physicians in Athens Medical Center’s graduate medical education program benefited from Foundation-funded lectureships.

  • Donor gifts made it possible for the Medical Library to maintain access to the most up-to-date electronic software, hardware, and printed materials.

  • Donations to the Chaplains’ Outreach Fund provided professional counseling to numerous individuals who otherwise could not afford the assistance.

  • The Foundation also served Athens Medical Center employees by conducting the annual Employees Assistance Fund campaign, which provides funds for unusual needs arising in employees’ families.

  • The Foundation provided funding through the James Hewitt Fund for nine Athens Medical Center nurses to attend various conferences within their disciplines.
